One of the things I stress about most during a session is helping my clients look as good as possible in their photos. A lot of the skill to get natural great looking images falls to me and my ability to help you relax. One of the reasons why I try to collaborate so much with clients is because it allows us to get to know each other a bit more before your session (’cause how awkward would you feel to have someone you’ve never really talked to start taking photos of you…awkward!!)

So while I make it my personal mission during your shoot to make you look fabulous, doing a little prep work will add to the fabulous-ness of your images. Here are some of my favorite tips for looking good in photos:

1. Be Yourself

Try to be as you as possible. If you are conscience about certain things it will show in your images. Be the confident you and you will see your best self in your pictures.

2. Relax

I’m my own worst critic so I get stressing yourself over little things. Just take a deep breathe and let it go.

3. Laugh

A (real) smile looks good on everyone.

4. Think about the moment

Don’t worry about always looking at me. Spend a moment and take in your family as it is – crazies and all!

5. Forget the camera

Forget I’m there and play with your family.

6. Practice in the Mirror

Study how you look in the mirror – what side do you like best? How do you get your best smile (or do you have a good serious face)?

7. Be comfortable

Wear clothing that is flattering, fits, and is comfortable (i.e. 6″ stilettos hurt so try some wedges instead)

8. Make Up

Keep it natural and classy but play it up a bit. I.e. a little bronzer may be fine for day-to-day wear but you won’t see the contours it creates with the normal amount you put on every day. Apply it a little thicker.

I also totally recommend pampering yourself for your shoot – have your make up professional done. You’ll love the results!

9. Dab

Houston summers are HOT. So be prepared for the heat with oil dabbing strips. oh and bug spray – don’t forget the bug spray!

10. Mind the lens

To look the most flattering keep your weight on your back foot and never stand with your body directly at the camera. Try to not allow one part of your body to be closer to the lens because it will make that part look larger than the rest of your body.

11. Posture

Pretend there is a string being pulled from the top of your head and relax your shoulders. Your neck and face will appear more flattering.

12. The Hands

I always get asked “What do I do with my hands?!” The easiest answer is to toss a hand on your hip (or for guys stick your fingers in your pocket – leave the thumb hanging out). Other ideas are to wrap yourself in your arms or lean your arm over your head (or lean your head onto your hand).

13. Love yourself

I’ve photographed people of all shapes, ages, and size. Every single person is beautiful regardless is they believe it or not. The transformation that occurs when someone goes from being nervous to loving themselves is astounding and you can see it in photos.
